Dawn over the Mara

A balloon shadow, a river still deciding, and the first gold on the grass.

We lifted before the sun had made up its mind. The basket creaked; the grass below still held the night’s blue. From that height the Mara is not a park but a weather system — herds as punctuation, rivers as arguments.

The crossing that did not happen

Everyone comes for the river. That morning the wildebeest gathered, hesitated, and chose the bank. Guides radioed each other in the dry shorthand of people who have watched this indecision for decades.

Luxury here is not marble. It is time, and a vehicle that knows when to stop.

Back at camp the coffee was already poured. I wrote coordinates in the front of the notebook the way other people write dates. The atlas begins wherever you agree to look slowly.
